False Scales

I prefer shopping for vegetables at supermarkets as opposed to going to markets. Yes, personally I would have loved to support the small scale vendors, but sadly I’m unable to do so.

The vendors at the market place have what seems like an array of amazing vegetables. However, they won’t let us pick and choose. They also often use dishonest scales. When I get home I find that not only do I have less weight, I have rotten stuff too.

How often do we judge people in a similar fashion? We judge using faulty or dishonest scales – yardsticks of the world….

The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favour with him – Proverbs 11:1

We use factors such as appearance unaware of what truly lies within them.

The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7

People with assets are deemed as successful but do they have true value? How would God view them?

God’s standards are often quite different from the world’s scales. He wants us to empty ourselves of our flesh by not conforming to the ways of the world. Instead He wants us to be TRANSFORMED by the renewing of our mind.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will – Romans 12:2

We need to keep emptying ourselves (the word Kenosis means self emptying) of things of the world….. What is seeing as achievement in the world is often the opposite for God. Wasn’t David the young boy with no armour but merely a sling and three stones the one who conquered over Goliath?

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness” – 1 Corinthians 3:19

Next time you are prompted to compare your self with someone who is shining in the world, remind yourself of God’s values and that you don’t know the scales they are using either!
