Eyes and Ears, Nose and Mouth

A friend compared one’s eyes to the ears in a presentation for his course work.  Eyes close and open, but ears are always open.

Ears that hear and eyes that see— the Lord has made them both – Proverbs 20:12

A mere few days later, I saw a FB post on another friend’s timeline with the image that I have shared here as the featured image.  Ears and the mouth were compared.  I realised this wasn’t coincidence of timing and thus have been reflecting on these points.  Since last month, I have seen a few more posts too!

We have the option of closing our eyes and mouths.  Hence, we can choose what we want to see and what we want to say – we can shut out what isn’t right or good to see let alone to speak.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen – Ephesians 4:29

Adam and Eve’s eyes were opened when they ate the fruit from the forbidden tree.  Satan had told them they would “be like God, knowing good and evil”.  In John 9:35-41, Jesus speaks of spiritual blindness.  We need to keep our spiritual eyes open.

Ears are always open, they always ‘hear’ noises around them.  We can’t shut out hearing but we do have the option to listen to what we want to or not.

The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out -Proverbs 18:15

This also includes discernment of doctrines and hence messages:

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths – 2 Timothy 4:3-4

Instead we are asked to

Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge – Proverbs 23:12

Let’s be a people to whom God can say:

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” – Isaiah 30:21

Likewise, the nose is always open.  It “receives and expels air for respiration alongside the mouth” (Wikipedia).  The dictionary defines the nose as the organ that is ‘used for breathing and smelling’.  When we get bad smells or polluted air, we cover our noses.

We need to be breathing, filtering out what we ought to breathe!

What is God saying to you through all of this both physically and spiritually?
