It’s been raining cats and dogs here for a number of days now. Yes, I feel sorry for those whose houses have been flooded and for those who have to go through the muddy waters. However, I have been grateful to God too given the heat wave that the country was experiencing prior to that for a couple of months – that was unbearable.
What if someone says in this weather, “I believe it will rain today” and not be prepared for it? For example carry the umbrella or rain coat, dress accordingly? If someone truly believed it would rain would they not be prepared for that?
The word ‘believe’ doesn’t mean confessing it with your tongue. Yes it includes that as the first step but it doesn’t stop there.
The diagram above depicts the culture core. Our worldview is what we would consider to be REAL. From this stems our beliefs of what we think is TRUE. Based on what we perceive to be true comes out our values – what is good, what is best etc. Our behaviour (actual conduct, actions) reflects our values.
Our words can be the first step but if our words and actions aren’t going hand in hand, then our words are not reflecting what is in our hearts. Yes, we can speak for a while but no matter how well we pretend, our behaviour gives us away as to what is really going on.. or at least a glimpse of it will sneak out!
Jesus does say that a good tree cannot yield bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot yield good fruit! Fruit from a bad tree can be waxed and cleaned to look good but one bite into the fruit gives the reality away. We can deceive others and perhaps fool ourselves but we cannot fool God – EVER!
God rebukes the Israelites through Isaiah:
The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught – Isaiah 29:13
How often do we honour God with merely words but our hearts, thoughts are far away? Our actions would reflect this accordingly. Those who truly believe in Jesus, will then yield their wills to Him and be led by the Holy Spirit. They are the 5 wise virgins. Those who claim to believe in Jesus may carry His Word (the lamp) but not be continually allowing the Holy Spirit to illuminate God’s Word (filling the lamps with oil that keeps it burning). These virgins (set apart from the world) were foolish. God says if anyone of you lacks wisdom, to ask Him for it!
Those who hate (shun, reject, block, push away, oppress, take revenge on) their brothers (brothers and sisters in Christ) are those who do not worship God in Spirit and in truth (or those who have back slidden hopefully only for a time and a season!)
Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen – 1 John 4:20
And such people are like the foolish virgins who saw the doors to the banquet hall close on them not allowing them to fellowship with the Groom.
Do you really believe in Jesus Christ or are you CLAIMING to love God?
