What’s on your mind? Well, “One particular vision”! It’s been on my mind a lot so not only have I been reflecting on it but I have also been discussing the setting with a friend. There is for sure more to the vision and that’s a revelation to me personally. However, I do believe there is a ‘word’ through the setting for all of us and I feel led to write it.
There was a brown dusty pathway… not that smooth, perhaps slightly rocky. A typical pathway that runs through forests. This pathway was ongoing and long yet the beauty of it never escaped the scene. Lush trees lined the pathway on both sides. It reminded me of the fun times during my University days in paradise on earth – New Zealand! We used to go trekking through the tranquil rainforests pausing ever so often to take in the breathtaking views! Sheer joy of savouring God’s presence in the midst of His creation! See the chatterbox was on a roll again and deviated!!!
Back to the vision.. well at least you get the visual of the pathway right?!
While walking, I also noticed a dark tarred road running parallel to the left of the pathway. A smooth hard road. In the same manner to the right of the pathway was a bright green lawn more like that in parks. Yet the hue was bright… to the point of being glaring.
The road was without any pot holes, smooth and steady. It would have been easy on the feet to walk on it.. perhaps even run! The journey would be a piece of cake with no danger of losing the footing but it would have been a bleak walk on this road of black tar. It was also ‘exposed’ and no shade – just out in the open!
The lawn on the other side of the pathway was bright and perhaps glary. It would have been soft to walk on – somewhat another easy journey. Yet like the tar road, it was also exposed and without shade – prone to danger.
The middle pathway wasn’t smooth… It was likely a path where we would stumble over a little stone here and there – it had its bumps and it had its lows. Yet there was enough light to see the way but shade so that we are shielded from the scorching sun. There was a sense of protection – not being vulnerable and not being exposed.
The middle pathway represents our walk with God. While the walk may not be smooth let alone easy so to speak, there will be troubles. Yet when under His covering, His protection is over us. The dark ways of the world and the flesh, or the bright enticement of the schemes of the enemy cannot then distract us. This path is the narrow path , the defined path that leads to eternal life. He has mapped out the path for each one of us, and He has lined it. The little stones can cause stumbling yet He promises we will not fall.
We often have many options in life. How do we make our choices? Are we asking questions such as these?
- What would I gain through this?
- How fast can I get it?
- What is the least inexpensive option? What is the most comfortable option?
- What will others think of me?
- What can I do without exerting or pushing myself?
Or do we ask God which option HE would want us to take? How would we know?
It won’t be trouble free – that’s for sure! Jesus tells us that in this world we will have trouble. But He also reassures us to take heart as He has overcome the world – John 16:33
Another thing is clear.. it’s a narrow path:
But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it – Matthew 7:14
It isn’t the ‘straight way’.
People who have left the straight way, wander off to follow idols, blackest darkness is reserved for them… They never stop sinning, they seduce the unstable, they are experts in greed – an accursed brood. … For they mouth empty, boastful words and by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error – 2 Peter 2:13-18
The ‘they’ is actually referring to false teachers but of course can include all people of the dark, with such descriptions in the reference above.
At the end of the day, if we take the path that God leads us on, no matter how the path is, we will be able to echo the Psalmist:
I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? … He will not let your foot slip – He who watches over you will not slumber.. The LORD watches over you – the LORD is your shade at your right hand, the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm – He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore – Isaiah 25:4
Those who dwell in His shade, “will flourish like the grain. He will blossom like a vine, and his fame will be like the wine from Lebanon” – Hosea 14:7
Ask God for discernment in every decision you have to make. Remember all that glitters is not gold.. Don’t take the easy way but take the way that God would have you to take. Whatever path you take, no matter how easy is setting yourself up for doom if it’s not God’s path. The path you take no matter how difficult will bring God the glory and you will see His presence no matter what if the path is the narrow pathway under His shade and protection.
