A few nights ago, I had a vision of a dove. It was flying across the sky… I realised that I was following it.. and as I was doing so, the dove kept picking up speed. In fact, I had to ultimately run to keep up with it.
It dawned on me (well, yes, literally it was dawn at the time of jotting this vision down too!) that God wants us to RUN!
The DOVE – simply beautiful, soothing, gentle , symbol of peace, harmless / innocent (Jesus calls us to be that way) and of course a symbol of the Holy Spirit. There are many occurrences of this term in the Bible.. . including as a term of endearment. I couldn’t resist looking up doves:
Apparently the pigeon and the dove is contrasted – according to the International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia – as follows: doves migrated, but pigeons remained in their chosen haunts all the year…. they remained wild… were the most loved by the people Nonetheless, the author of this entry comments or rather interprets Noah’s reasons for choosing a dove (these are speculations as not explicitly in the Bible but something that can be pondered on…) …bethought him of the most loving and tender bird he knew – the dove. It not only would return to the ark, but would enter and go to the cage of its mate, and if it found green food… Also: when doves coo and moan and to our ears grow most pitiful in their cries, they are the happiest in the mating season.
Perhaps I got a bit carried away.. but then again, perhaps God wants us to reflect on the dove in itself to get a deeper revelation from the vision! Keywords that stand out in my eyes – tender, love, loyalty, nurturing, migratory… And to deviate a bit first..
The dove is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. We see that in the record of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I’m also reminded of what Jesus told Nicodemus (John 3):
“No one can enter the Kingdom of God UNLESS he is born of water AND the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. … The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit”
It is indeed vital, essential to be born of the Spirit…
.. To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God – John 1:12-13
Have you received Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, as THE way, THE truth, THE life? Do you believe that no one may go to the Father but through Him? Do you believe in His matchless name and in His works as man on earth? If so… Isn’t that simply beautiful that we have the right to become God’s children?
Some of us are citizens of a particular country as they were born there.. of natural descent.. However some of us migrated to another country and got our residency permits. Then once we had lived there a certain time, we had the right to become a citizen of that country. However, to gain that citizenship we have to APPLY for it and follow the criteria attached. In Canada, sitting an exam was also a part of the procedure. Once the formalities were fulfilled, I became a Canadian.
Likewise when we believe we have the RIGHT to be children of God. However, it doesn’t automatically make us children of God:
“Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God” – John 1:14
As we are led by Him, as we are led by the Holy Spirit, our nature becomes more and more like Jesus Christ.. the keywords of the dove above set in… We become vessels of peace, of love, become increasingly loyal to God, we become harmless as doves, we migrate in response to the great commission of GO…
When we are led by the Holy Spirit not knowing the direction that He is leading us in, we get stripped of all that we use as crutches – whatever it is that we rely on for comfort or for our security… from assets to wealth to values to certain people to culture, traditions and prejudices. As we are filled by the Holy Spirit, we become people who display the fruit of the Spirit in an increasing manner.. Our prejudices which normally are formed by a “we are better” attitude begins to melt and we realise that what we see is just the tip of the iceberg.
It is not an option to be surrender to being led by the Spirit, but vital if you want to truly be a believer. It takes much faith to depend on Him and His leading than it does to rely on what is seen and what is in our hands, our resources…
Let us throw off EVERYthing that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us – Hebrews 12:1
(I have to share this divine intervention here… I had already jotted down the phrase “throw all that hinders” when I jotted down the key points for the blog with the intention of getting the verse later – as I start typing. When it came to the “sons of God” section, I was searching for the 2 verses mentioned above and did a search on this phrase. I was dazed to see Hebrews 12:1 popping up in that – as I so don’t see “sons of God” in the verse but that was the next verse I was going to find the reference for!)
What are we asked to throw off? EVERY thing that hinders and we are also asked to thrown off the SIN that so EASILY ENTANGLES. Reflect on the words in capitals!!
- What / who is hindering you today from being led by the Holy Spirit in accordance to God’s perfect and pleasing will for YOUR life?
- What sin is easily entangling you today?
- Are you willing to run and persevere in the race set out for you? Are you willing chase behind the Holy Spirit even if the speed picks up and the direction is unknown?
- Are you desiring and willing to THROW them off? What are your resolutions in order to do that? Would asking at least 2 people who are rooted in God who are not judgmental and who know God’s grace, to keep you accountable help you carry out your plans to THROW?
- What is it that you are holding back from letting go in order to follow His prompting and leading? Why are you doing so? Allow the Holy Spirit to search your hearts and lead you as a CHILD of God!
Act now…Throw off all that needs to be shed off NOW… tomorrow may be too late!
