I saw this image (which I have set as featured imaged for this post) in my FB news feed yesterday. This creative image= full of humour – speaks volumes as far as I’m concerned… It offers much to reflect on for those who believe in Christ.. or even for those who are wondering about Christ..
My friends wouldn’t be surprised at this choice of image as they know my craze for butterflies. In fact it is the logo of Kenosis Ministries 🙂
Just imagine this…
a creepy crawly caterpillar.. plodding along its way… weaving through the grassy roots… nibbling through the day…
Ok that just ended up being a rhyme.. but hey.. you get the picture of the seemingly blissful life of a caterpillar.. until one day, bang boom.. it gets surrounded by a cocoon… dark and yucky and restrictive.. I wonder what races through it’s mind then… Would it know what lies ahead? Would it be thinking “why me?” or perhaps would it look back fondly at the good old days with a nostalgic tear or two?
During the time of this turmoil of mixed emotions springs out a beautiful butterfly.. leaving behind the ugly outer covering… It’s a new creation with new characteristics and a new found freedom. It no longer has to plod its way through and take eons to get from A to B… There is no ‘weight’ to carry and no longer would people look at it and go “ewww”. In fact.. now people would admire the light butterfly in its arrays of hues fluttering by and touching the heart..
Would anyone recognise the caterpillar now in its transformed state? Yes, those that now check the ID of the caterpillar would obviously scratch their heads!
Our spiritual walk is not much different… Many of us are happy to be in the state of the caterpillar.. weighed down with the routine, plodding along but not going far. They may think they are and thus they make the choice to be independent of God.
However, there is another sect of people who believe in the work of Jesus Christ. We believe that through the shedding of blemish free blood on the cross, death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, our sins have been forgiven and we have been washed as white as snow…
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” – John 3:16
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them”
– 2 Corinthians 5:17:19
Where do you stand today?
- Are you like the caterpillar, blissfully happy making your way through life – independently thinking that you have no need for God?
- Or are you a caterpillar in the cocoon… in the process of transformation, being moulded, refined by the trials and troubles of life to be restored in the image of Christ? Are you wondering why me or are you holding on tightly to the promises of God eagerly anticipating what lies ahead?
- Or are you like the attractive butterfly touching peoples hearts with your mere presence as you are the vessel of God pointing to God’s grace and mercy – having laid down all your burdens at the Feet of Jesus letting Him carry your yoke, while you are led by the Holy Spirit having gained freedom? Are you such that people around you see the transformation and have to scratch their heads when they look at your “IDs” as you are no longer of the world but a citizen of heaven?
- Are people able to recognise you as His disciples?
By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” – John 13:35
It’s not about your preaching, it’s not about your religious attitudes or churchy stuff… it’s all about LOVE…
Every ministry or works that we do is fruitless if our lives aren’t centred around the 2 greatest commandments of loving God and loving each other as ourselves..
What is your fruit today? Does your life reflect the fruit of the Holy Spirit or is it quenched more by the acts of the sinful nature (Galatians 6)..
Make your choice remembering the consequences of your choices are for you to bear…
You can decide to be a caterpillar sore to the eyes of others weighed down by the ways of the world and without relationship with God only to perish and not have eternal life. Or you can decide to go through the cocoon stage to come out transformed into a new creation.. light and free with renewed intimacy with the living God eternally…
