Life to Life

A vision… Cloves in a transparent glass jar…  Not an ‘attractive’ sight for sure but the surroundings dimmed out and the focus was on this jar.  I pondered upon it.  However, the first thing that came to my mind was the word AROMA!

Next thing I did what I usually do when I stumble across a concept and topic.. I was surprised that “cloves” were not mentioned in the Scriptures anywhere – not even in the spices and fragrances that are mentioned especially in Song of Solomons.  Then I checked the internet which confirmed my speculations of cloves being beneficial for health.  I was aware of cloves or clove oil being used for toothaches.  However, I now discovered that cloves are also rich in anti-oxidants.  They also have anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, local anesthetic and anti-flatulent properties… Ok I’m anti-ed out here.

Cloves are used a lot in a variety of cuisines across the world – I remember trying out a dish a few years ago, middle eastern lamb studded with cloves.  I also remember having meals at a Gujarati friend’s home and wasn’t then that comfortable with the rather generous amounts of cloves in their diets.

I also remembered reading a FB post that sticking cloves into a citric fruit deters mosquitos.  Apparently clove oil repels mosquitoes even better than citronella oil.  It made me think how it is possible for one thing to be able to assist with (human) life while the very same thing to kill or repel another life (that of insects or mosquitoes)!

However, even while I was doing my research, a verse that was left in a comment on one of my FB pictures came to mind just a few days before the vision.. “aroma of life leading to life..”.  This vision seemed as if it was confirmation of the word of encouragement given to me…

For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved

and among those who are perishing.

To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death,

and to the other the aroma of life leading to life.

And who is sufficient for these things? – 2 Corinthians 2:15-16 (NKJV)

For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who arperishing.  To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?” (NIV).

Just imagine being like cloves.. The aroma of cloves enhances our lives while it prohibits mosquitoes gaining ‘life’ (well it repels them from us right?!).  Well, in God’s eyes, those of us who believe in Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour and that He is THE way, THE truth and THE life, we are His fragrance to God.  For those who are being saved, ie those who are turning to Christ, we are the aroma of life leading to life.. we are the fragrance of life… While to the others, we are the smell of death..

  • How do these verses impact you?

It gives me Goosebumps.. shivers.. A tad scary even.. but this is what Scripture is saying.. And we, who believe in Jesus Christ, are the temple of the Living God.. The Holy Spirit dwells within us.

Do take some time to reflect on this vision of a glass jar set on a table with cloves (the flower spices in it).  Think of its properties and then think of these verses mentioned above.

  • What does it mean to you that we are the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved?
  • Is your life a fragrance of life and the smell of death?
  • Where do you stand today?  Are you being saved or are you among those who are perishing?  Jesus Christ states that no one goes to the Father other than through Him.. He makes it clear that He is THE (the only) way, THE truth and THE life.

It would be nice to hear from you 🙂

God bless you.
