I know it’s crazy but how often can a woman look at her wardrobe full of stuff, but tell herself, “I have nothing to wear!”? Well to be fair… there are so many expectations of ‘right’ dress code in this day and age – and it does become a real burden! Casual wear, party wear, beach wear, maternity clothes, formal clothing, smart casual, summer wear, winter wear (even if you live in the tropics, for when you want to head home!), home clothing.. the list goes on! And then of course, there is the issue of ‘cross cultural clashes’ whereby what you think goes, will be ‘taboo’… So you have some clothes to suit your taste and comfort, and some to be ‘accepted’!! Arrghhh…
MEN – this goes for you guys too ok! So don’t smirk – it’s just that you do a better job of having it all under control with the put on cool exterior of yours! 😛
However, in all honesty, more often than not, the panic is simply due to being unorganised and perhaps covetous. We ‘keep’ much with us for sentimental reasons or out of fear for a rainy day. Some clothes are kept ‘in case we lose weight’ and for some of us who fluctuate in our weights a lot – there are some clothes that will be to cater to these fluctuations! I’m longingly clinging onto my LEVIs from Canada, hoping that I will be able to use it again as the fit was awesome – before I dropped my weight… and yes, I’m the type that many envy who can eat endlessly, pack in the calories and struggle to keep my weight on. Having said that, it seems more difficult to keep it on when I’m here in Sri Lanka! Maybe the humidity!
Things that we can’t wear and perhaps we won’t ever wear – we keep hoarding them. Things that don’t benefit us, we are unable to let others benefit from either! And it just takes up unnecessary room in our wardrobes making it all a clutter unable to find / locate the things we really need. It takes up valuable space and in tropical climates makes the musty smells accumulate further.
What comes to mind right now is this verse!
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. – Matthew 6:19-20.
It’s an area where we all most likely struggle with, perhaps to different extents as there exists a very fine line between needs and treasures! The worldly trends are to store, to save for a rainy day… but what Jesus seems to say is quite the opposite. In fact, warning is given elsewhere!
Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. – James 5:1-3
Our hearts and minds are no better! I wonder if it would be apt to say that our wardrobes mirror our hearts and minds!
- What is the state of your wardrobe today?
- How much of it can you actually weed out? Are you actually holding onto unnecessary stuff?
- Do you have room to accept more appropriate useful stuff?
- What can someone say about you when they look at your wardrobe – selfish? unorganised? generous? …
Likewise with your heart and mind!!
- What is the state of it? Is it tidy or is there there much clutter?
- What things that you should be letting go and getting rid of, are today cluttering your mind and heart? Fear, worries, anxieties, un-forgiveness, bitterness, pain, envy, covetousness, selfish ambition, earthly treasures….?
- Is it so full that you are unable to receive the treasures of heaven, the blessings of love and grace from God?
God calls us to love Him with ALL our heart, ALL our soul, ALL our mind and ALL our strength! What is prohibiting you from loving Him so? Obviously if your heart, mind, soul and strength is hoarded with earthly treasures, how can you love Him with your ALL? This is what sin is all about – not doing what He has asked us to do! It’s not about good or bad! Besides, what is the point of hoarding if tomorrow is to be the last day on earth – well the signs for that are rapidly increasing!!
Run to Him right now! He has His arms stretched out wide open, ready to embrace you, ready to guide you if you are willing to ask Him for wisdom and guidance!! Ask Him to reveal to you what you are hoarding and what is indeed required… so that you can soak in His love and be healed in His presence… and trust in Him to meet your needs as long as you are where God has called you to be!
Seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these (needs) will be added to you – Matthew 6:33.
