Each to His Task

How do ants seem to appear out of nowhere? How do they know when a minute food particle is lying around? It beats me. The line they form as they scurry to and fro gathering their findings is incredible. There is a sense of order. However, it is irritating when the trespassing ant is given a chance to get out of the sugar container, but yet it seems to go about in circles rather than actually make its way out!

The Bible refers to ants as being ‘wise’. “Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer” (Proverbs 30:24-25).  People who are lazy are to learn a lesson from the ways of the ants, “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest” (Proverbs 6:6).

Then again we ALL have something to learn from the wise ants…. God intended in His prototype of creation for mankind to be under His rule. God delegated authority over the earth and all that is in it to humans. The desire to be wise and to be like God, led to interrupted intimacy with God. Years later, people demanded a king to rule over them. This was definitely not God’s perfect plan for mankind. We have got accustomed to operating under human headship that we are unable to even begin to comprehend what it means to function under God’s rule – DIRECTLY under God’s rule. Instead we seek for approval from others and / or we look to others and situations to meet our needs. I think it’s rather sad that we have got so used to looking at things the way the world looks at it, and thus have become programmed accordingly.

We forget that we are the Body of Christ with Jesus being the head. Like each part of our physical body has a different role to play, each one of us who are members of the Body of Christ, have a delegated function. We all can’t be eyes nor can we all be ears. The problem is very so often perhaps with the wrong motives or perhaps with even good intentions of being humble and pulling up our weight, we try to step into another role. Simply said, an ear cannot plant itself in the eye socket and expect it to be able to see! An ear has been designed to hear. It protects the body via this function. When each of us fulfils the task that has been designated to us, the Body simply operates… according to the perfect plan of God.

What is the role that God has given you? What is it that you are doing?

• Who do you look to as your ultimate Head?

The ants put us to shame on this count.

“It has no commander, no overseer or ruler” yet it does what it ought to do; each to its task.

Isn’t it rare to see an ant working alone?  They come together and get things done!  Are we going about our own tasks as delegated to us by God? Or do we obey human authority at the expense of what God is telling us to do? Often we do the latter for acceptance, for popularity, for approval from others etc. None of us like to be flowing against the tide. However, isn’t the walk of a believer just that? Are we not expected to carry our crosses? It is often other believers that discourage us from carrying our crosses or who prevent us from going through periods of trials / refining as people are quick to condemn. Human leadership is governed by rules and regulations, policies and principles. God is motivated by the love for people with grace and compassion and mercy and yet truth and justice.

What governs you today? What motivates your decisions?

• Are you able to do what you are ought to do, with no human commander, no overseer or ruler?

• What is the lesson that the ants are teaching you today?

I am not discounting human authority. It may not have been God’s perfect plan but it sure is in His permissible will. The Bible is clear about us submitting to human authority. However we need to also be aware that no matter what, our first and foremost obligation is to submit to God’s authority, to what He wants us to do.

He may have been showing you what to do… you may know what it is today. But perhaps you are despairing and thus lacking faith to see it being fulfilled. Perhaps your leadership is not confirming what God is laying on your heart. Perhaps they are blocking the doors and no doors seem to be opening. Don’t give up, don’t give up and be still and know that HE is God. Remember God anointed David to be king way before David became king. Remember Joseph’s family ridiculed him on behalf of his vision and sent him the opposite way. Did God not fulfil His Word?

Don’t give up dear reader… stay put and stay in faith, that in His timing He will bring things to pass if only you will not disobey what He is telling you to do. Do not waver and miss out on the promise!
